7 Road Trip Essentials

When taking a road trip, there are some things you want to be sure to take along with you. Whether you're after comfort, convenience or safety, it's best to be prepared when you're out on the open road.

These essentials are among the must-haves for any lake trip:

Boppy Pillow - Remember, you’re on a road trip. If you are going on a long road trip, you’ll want to have the best posture for as long as possible. It sounds a little crazy, but I've found that a Boppy breastfeeding pillow makes for the perfect driving posture. You can rest your elbows on the pillow, keeping your head over your torso, shoulders back, and both hands on the wheel at four and eight o'clock. The added benefit to using a Boppy pillow is that it also doubles for its intended use—making breastfeeding mothers comfortable and making the feeding experience ergonomic.

Cell Phone Chargers - You’re going to be away from home for an extended time and that means your cell phone will need to be charged while out and about. I like solar chargers because they’re great for walks around a lake, or while sightseeing.

Rain Coat - You don’t want to be half way to your destination and discover that you forgot your weather gear. A rain coat is a must when traveling in Texas, including Lake Bridgeport, especially during rainy season. Your best bet is to keep an extra rain coat in the vehicle for each member of the family, so pack a road trip bag with this essential item already loaded.

Paper Map or Atlas - Thanks to smartphones, most of us have completely forgotten about maps and atlases, but this is an essential item because there are still areas where there is low connectivity. The last thing you want is to be stuck somewhere you aren’t familiar and find out your GPS isn’t working. You’re better off keeping a paper map or atlas in the glove box in case you need it, and they’re inexpensive so there’s no excuse.

Tools - Every driver should have a toolbox in the car. If you’re a frequent road-tripper, you’ll want a folding 4-way lug wrench and jumper cables at the least. A handheld CB radio, roadside markers, and a jumper pack can all be handy if you're down on your luck. You'll also find that a wrench, screwdriver, and a pair of pliers are some essential tools to keep in the vehicle. Evaluate your own needs. Certain vehicles may require special tools, or your lifestyle may require specific tools that might not come in a kit.

Spare Parts - Headlight bulbs, spark plugs, portable OBDII reader, a small socket set, and other spare car parts are essential for any road trip. If you have car problems while away from home, you’ll be glad you brought these along.

Games - If you have kids, you’ll want some games for family time. Whatever your favorite games are, nothing beats enjoying some family down time at Lake Bridgeport after the sun goes down.

Don’t arrive at Lake Bridgeport without these essential road trip items. Better yet, don’t leave home without them!

Lake Bridgeport

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 21)

FAIR. Water stained; 75 degrees; 0.45 feet above pool. Crappie are primarily roaming, but there are some active fish on dock poles. The bite should improve as the water temperature increases. Largemouth bass are slow shallow using topwaters and chatterbaits. White bass and hybrids are good on wind blown points with crankbaits and main lake humps, slabs or live shad. Catfish bite is good on cut bait. Report by Jack Pellegrini, Lake Bridgeport Crappie Guide Service. As we enjoy a weekend of fishing we salute and honor our Nation’s heroes this Memorial Day. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic this weekend.
